Name: Vermeer Science Center

Location: Central College, Pella, Iowa

Architect: Holabird & Root

Award: 2003 ABC National Excellence in Construction

The Vermeer Science Center Project located on the Central college campus in Pella Iowa consisted of 27,500 square feet of renovation and a 44,500 square foot addition. The original structure consisted of a two story CMU wall supporting bar joist with steel deck with concrete on first level and CMU wall supporting steel deck, insulation and membrane roof on the second level.

The west lab addition consisted of poured concrete decks with steel studs and CMU walls on the first two levels. The third level is the new mechanical penthouse with steel construction used in the walls and the roof. The west exterior wall of the addition consists of glass curtain wall. The north office addition also used concrete construction with steel studs for the wall framing.

Work was started in January 2002 and completed in May 2003. As with most combination addition/remodels, the owner needed the additional square footage of the additions to move into prior to being able to start any of the remodel areas. The HVAC system starts with a 78,000 CFM custom air handling unit that was manufactured by Energy Labs Inc. of San Diego, California.

We feel that this project showed some of the best true partnering of any project we have worked on. The owner was very knowledgeable and knew what he wanted but was also very realistic and open to different ideas. There were almost none of the heated style debates that are common on difficult projects and all the contractors showed good cooperation with each other, and achieved a high quality good valued finished product.
