The general contractor began the Community Y of Marshalltown site work and the building layout survey during the spring of 2002. By late summer, the footings were poured for the mason to start laying the walls. Winter was fast approaching and the A Trades were working at a fast pace trying to enclose the north half of the building before winter. There were concerns the total job would be pushed back or shut down due to cold weather.

The first challenge we faced was setting two 20 foot long, 12 foot wide & 10 foot tall energy recovery units weighing about 15,000 lbs. We needed to place the units in the second floor mechanical room located 100 feet inward from the edge in the middle of the north part of the building. It took two employees to direct the crane operator. The north side of the second story section had steal joists and decking for the roof that was constructed just in time for us to install ductwork in this area during the winter months. Installation of temporary heat kept the work area at a comfortable working temperature that the mastics and sealers could adhere.

Construction of the lap pool and recreational pool began in spring of 2003. This area used aluminum round spiral pipe ranging from 20″ to 40″ in diameter and was shipped to the job site in 10 foot sections. They carefully placed the spiral pipe onto the scissor lift with very little movement, then hoisting it 40 feet in the air being extra cautious not to scratch or place finger prints onto the aluminum since this was going to be the finished look. The ductwork in the gym was another labor-intensive part of this project. A scissor lift was utilized to install the duct thirty-five feet into the air, which was required to be installed through the joist spaces. The finished product was going to be painted white. Extra care and duct sealer was used on this installation as the smallest leak would create dust streaks that would be visible and detract from the quality of the facility.

The final punch list began during the month of January, 2004. Finalization of details in all areas of the building and the HVAC system was scheduled for this facility. The state swim meet was held at the Community Y of Marshalltown in March, 2004. We feel all trades worked very hard to make everything come together to give the community of Marshalltown one of the highest quality facilities in the state of Iowa. Cunningham, Inc. is proud of the teamwork that was shown by our employees to accomplish this project.
